How does a Wi-Fi QR code work?
The code holds the network name, password and security type in a standard text format.
Phone cameras recognise the WIFI: format and offer to join the network. On iPhone the camera app shows a banner, and on Android the camera or Google Lens does the same. Nobody has to read out or type a password.
The text inside the code is not encrypted, so anyone who can scan it gets the password. Use it where you'd be happy to tell people the password anyway: a guest network, a café, a meeting room.
The code stays valid until the network name or password changes. Print a new one when you change them.
Common questions
Does it work on both iPhone and Android? +
Yes. iOS 11 and later and Android 10 and later read the code from the camera. Older Android versions need a scanner app.
Is it safe to put my password in an online tool? +
Here it never leaves your browser: the code is generated on this page with JavaScript, with no request sent. You can also disconnect from the internet after the page loads.
What if my password has special characters? +
They are escaped according to the format, so semicolons, colons, commas, quotes and backslashes work.
Which security type should I pick? +
Choose WPA for nearly every modern network, including WPA2 and WPA3. WEP is obsolete and only for very old routers.
