Image sizes for link previews.

When a link is shared, platforms show a card with an image. These are the sizes and limits to design for, so the picture isn't cropped or dropped.

The short version

One image works almost everywhere.

Use an image of 1200 × 630 pixels, a 1.91 to 1 ratio, as your og:image. It is the recommended size for Facebook and LinkedIn, and WhatsApp, Slack, Discord and iMessage show it well. X uses a 2 to 1 card, so keep the important content in the middle of the picture, away from the edges.

Save it as JPG or PNG under about 1 MB, serve it over HTTPS and reference it with an absolute URL.

Tips

Make the card work.

Keep text large

Previews are shown small. Use big, short text and avoid fine print.

Safe area in the middle

Platforms crop differently. Keep key content away from the edges.

Absolute URL

og:image must be a full https:// address, not a relative path.

Reachable without a login

Crawlers can't sign in. The image must load for anyone.

Set the dimensions

Add og:image:width and og:image:height so platforms can lay out the card without loading the file first.

Refresh after changes

Platforms cache cards. Use each one's debugger to fetch the new image.

See how your link looks before you share it.

Preview the card on the main platforms and check the image loads.

FAQ

Common questions

Which size should I pick if I can only make one? +

1200 × 630 pixels. It is the Open Graph recommendation and works on every platform in the table.

Why does my image look cropped on X? +

X uses a 2 to 1 card, which is wider than 1.91 to 1, so the top and bottom may be trimmed. Keep important content in the centre.

Do I need a separate twitter:image? +

Not necessarily. X falls back to og:image. Add twitter:image only if you want a different crop for X.

How do I check that my image loads? +

The Open Graph checker previews the card and tests that the image URL returns an image.
