The turning point was spam. Lots of it.
The first version of shorturl.la had no accounts at all — paste a link, get a short one, done. That openness is exactly what spammers love, and it didn't take long before the same tool that shortened honest links was being used to hide nasty ones.
Rather than bolt on filters and play whack-a-mole, I rebuilt the whole thing around a single idea: every link should have an owner. Sign in, and your links live in one place where you can name them, tag them, edit where they point, and see exactly how they're performing.
That one change fixed the spam and turned a throwaway utility into something worth coming back to. It's still a young, independent project — and that's the part I like most.
