Basics

When do two URLs point to the same page?

Often more of them do than you'd think.

Two URLs can look different and still load the same page: a trailing slash, www or no www, parameters in a different order, or a tracking parameter that the page ignores. Others look nearly identical but differ in a path character or a single parameter and lead to different content.

Comparing them part by part shows which differences matter. The tool also checks whether they are equal after normalising what normally doesn't change meaning: host case, a trailing slash, www, parameter order and the fragment.

It is useful when auditing redirects, checking canonical tags, cleaning link lists and debugging why two campaign links are counted separately.

FAQ

Common questions

Does parameter order change the page? +

Usually not. Most sites read parameters by name, so ?a=1&b=2 and ?b=2&a=1 return the same page. A few poorly built sites do care, so it is worth verifying.

Are www and non-www the same site? +

Not necessarily. They are different hostnames that most sites redirect to one another, but they can serve different content. The tool reports them as equivalent only after normalisation.

Does the path case matter? +

Yes. Hostnames are case-insensitive, but paths usually are not, so /Page and /page can be different URLs.

Does it fetch the pages? +

No. It compares the URLs as text. Use the redirect checker to see where each one actually leads.
