Turn any long URL into a short, trackable link.

Basics

What is Open Graph?

A set of tags that tells other sites how to show your page when it is shared.

Open Graph is a protocol introduced by Facebook and now read by almost every platform that unfurls links: LinkedIn, Slack, Discord, WhatsApp, iMessage and more. A few tags in the page head name the title, description and image to use.

X (Twitter) reads its own twitter: tags first and falls back to Open Graph when they are missing. Without any of these tags, platforms guess from the page, often picking a poor image or none at all.

Platforms cache cards. After you fix a page, you may need to ask the network's debugger to fetch it again before the new card appears.

FAQ

Common questions

What size should an Open Graph image be? +

1200×630 pixels (a 1.91:1 ratio) is the safest choice. It displays as a large card on most platforms. Keep the file under about 8 MB and use JPG or PNG.

Why does the shared link still show the old image? +

Social networks cache cards for a long time. Use the network's own sharing debugger to refresh its copy after you update the tags.

Do I need both og: and twitter: tags? +

Open Graph tags are enough for most platforms, and X falls back to them. Add twitter:card if you want to choose between the small and large card layouts.

Why is the preview different from what Facebook shows? +

Each platform has its own layout and rules, so the previews here are close approximations built from the same tags.
