What is a mailto link?
A link that opens the visitor's email app with a message started.
A mailto: link starts with the recipient and can carry cc, bcc, subject and body as parameters. Clicking it opens the default email app with those fields filled in, so people don't have to type the address or remember what to ask.
Special characters must be percent-encoded, and line breaks in the body become %0D%0A. The generator handles that, so the link works in every mail client.
Keep in mind that a plain email address on a page is easy for spam bots to harvest, and that mailto links do nothing for visitors who use webmail without a registered handler.
Common questions
Can I add several recipients? +
Yes. Separate the addresses with commas in the To, CC or BCC field.
Is there a length limit? +
Browsers and mail apps cope with a few thousand characters, but very long bodies can be cut off. Keep the prefilled message short.
Why does nothing happen when I click the link? +
The visitor's device needs a default mail app or a webmail handler. On a desktop without one, the click appears to do nothing.
Will this protect my address from spam bots? +
No. A mailto link exposes the address in the HTML. A contact form is safer if spam is a concern.
