Basics

How do YouTube timestamp links work?

A t parameter in seconds tells YouTube where to begin.

Adding &t=83s to a watch URL, or ?t=83 to a youtu.be link, starts the video at 1 minute 23 seconds. It is the quickest way to point someone at the part of a long video that matters.

For embedded players the parameter is called start and is written inside the iframe's src. The generator produces all three forms from any YouTube URL: watch, shorts, embed, live or youtu.be.

Timestamp links also work as the destination of a short link or a QR code, which is handy for lectures, demos and tutorials.

FAQ

Common questions

Which time formats are accepted? +

mm:ss, hh:mm:ss, a value such as 1h2m3s, or plain seconds.

Does the link work for YouTube Shorts? +

The tool accepts Shorts URLs and turns them into a standard watch link. Timestamps in Shorts are not always honoured by the app.

Can I make the embedded video start at a time? +

Yes. Use the embed code, which includes the start parameter with the time in seconds.

Why does the video start at the beginning for some people? +

The YouTube app on some devices ignores the parameter, and videos with ads may play an ad first. Browser players are the most reliable.
