Basics

How does a query string work?

Everything after the ? in a URL, as name=value pairs joined by &.

A query string carries parameters to the page: a search term, a filter, a page number or a tracking code. Each pair is written name=value, and pairs are joined with &.

Characters with a special meaning, such as &, =, ?, # and spaces, must be percent-encoded inside names and values. Forgetting that is the most common reason a link silently loses part of its parameters.

The builder encodes each name and value for you and puts them together, optionally in alphabetical order so that the same set of parameters always produces the same URL.

FAQ

Common questions

Should spaces be %20 or +? +

Both work in a query string. %20 is valid everywhere in a URL. + is the older form-encoding convention and is understood only in the query part.

What happens to a parameter with no value? +

A line with only a key produces key= with an empty value. Remove the line if you don't want the parameter.

Can I repeat a parameter? +

Yes. Add the same key on several lines, for example tag=red and tag=blue. Most servers read them as a list.

Is the order of parameters important? +

Rarely, but sorting keeps URLs consistent, which helps caching and makes links easier to compare.
